Hastelloy itself is a nickel-based alloy, but unlike ordinary pure nickel (Ni200) and Monel, it uses chromium-molybdenum as the main alloying element, which aims to improve the adaptability to various media and temperatures, and is targeted at different industries. Special optimization has been carried out. At present, the chemical industry generally pursues high production capacity and continuously improves the process to increase the temperature and pressure to speed up the reaction speed, so that the production is prone to unpredictable conditions, resulting in unplanned maintenance. Hastelloy is aimed at such a demand, adapts to various unpredictable harsh environments, and minimizes unplanned maintenance. At the same time, it also has very good processing and welding performance for easy on-site maintenance.

Hastelloy classification. At present, corrosion-resistant Hastelloy alloys are mainly divided into C series, B series, G series and D series alloys. Table 1 lists the components of some commonly used Hastelloy alloys.

C series alloy is nickel-chromium-molybdenum alloy. Because chromium can form a dense oxide film (passivation) on the surface of the alloy, providing anti-oxidation environmental capabilities, while molybdenum mainly provides anti-reduction environmental capabilities. Therefore, C series alloys can be used in environments with both oxidizing and reducing media. C series alloys are the most widely used alloys, especially the C-276 alloy. Since being invented in the 1960s, they have shown strong vitality after more than 40 years of testing. After the development of C-4, it mainly meets the needs of a small number of European users, and is currently only seen in older equipment. The C-22 alloy enhances corrosion resistance without increasing costs, and the cost performance is particularly excellent. C-2000? As a new generation product provides a greater range of safe use, very suitable for users who want to improve equipment life and test new processes. At present, C series alloys have been applied in quite a few industries in China. Such as fine chemical industry (TDI, PTA, acetic acid / anhydride, acrylic acid, etc.); environmental engineering industry (FGD, sewage treatment); plate heat exchanger industry, etc. There are still many industries that have used Hastelloy abroad, but the domestic is still in the experimental stage, such as the pharmaceutical industry.

B series alloys are nickel-molybdenum alloys, which provide the most superior corrosion resistance for completely reduced environments. Although B series alloys are excellent in reducing environments, they are very sensitive to oxidizing media (iron, copper ions). 50ppm of iron ions has already sufficiently reduced the corrosion resistance of B series alloys. Due to the special properties of B series alloys, the application is relatively concentrated. The most important one is the production of acetic acid (oxo synthesis method), as well as some sulfuric acid recovery systems. At present, the widely used grades are B-3, B-2 has gradually withdrawn from the market due to the lack of processing performance.

The G series alloys are nickel-chromium-iron alloys (except G-35 alloys). The high chromium content makes this series of alloys outstanding in terms of oxidation resistance. At the same time, the new G series alloys (G-30? G-35?) Also have good resistance to pitting corrosion, plus a small amount of copper content, enhanced resistance to sulfuric acid and hydrofluoric acid. Therefore, G series alloys are mainly used in strong oxidizing environments and complex environments of mixed acids, such as wet-process phosphoric acid and steel plant pickling lines.

D series alloys are nickel-chromium-silicon alloys. Because this series of alloys contains a certain amount of silicon, it can produce a fairly stable oxide film on the surface, which is aimed at extremely strong oxidizing environments, but it is extremely difficult to weld this alloy. The D series alloy currently mass-produced is D-205, which is used in plate heat exchangers in a high-temperature concentrated sulfuric acid environment. The alloy is currently the sole agent of Alfa Lafa and only provides finished products.

Hastelloy has been continuously developing, deriving new alloy materials and promoting the development of the industry. It has quite superior environmental adaptability, and its corrosion resistance is quite reliable. For the special environment of various industries, there are targeted solutions.
